Room 10 had a terrific excursion to Fremantle on Monday 7 September. We had a chance to experience life on an old sailing ship. We visited the replica ship, 'Dyfken', which is situated in the Port of Fremantle.
The 'Dyfken' sailed from Holland to Queensland in 1606. It had sailed to the Indonesian islands , then proceeded to sail, thinking they were going to New Guinea, instead they landed in Queensland in Cape York.
At that time, in 1606, no-one realised how large Australia actually was.
It was a great day full of Australian history.
Our day ended with a visit to the Shipwreck Museum. We were able to learn so much about the early
explorers, and how they are still apart of our history.
We saw the plate which was left by Dirk Hartog and even saw a model of the Dyfken.
We had an opportunity to sketch the 'Dyfken' before boarding.
It was amazing how many details we had to include in our sketches.
Inside the 'Dyfken' in the sleeping quarters for the Captain of the ship.
Our guide was explaining to use about the cannons on the ship.
Meeting our guide before boarding the 'Dyfken'.
Explaining to us how the steering was operated.
Going down under the main deck, to where all the supplies were stored.
It would have been very dark and rough sailing down here in 1606.
Under the main deck.
It felt very cold and damp.
We walked to the Round House in Fremantle.
We are standing in front of the Whale Tunnel, which was dug
out of the limestone rock underneath the Round House.
Inside the Shipwreck Museum.
Tahlia had a terrific day.....
